Spocktober + Trektober Day 13 - First Contact
So. I heard in Strange New Worlds those two freaks shook hands? At their first meeting? Scandalous!
(ID under cut)
[Image ID: A black and white drawing of Jim Kirk and Spock shaking hands for the first time. Only their hands and a few inches of their uniform sleeves are visible. Spock's hand, on the left, is larger and shaking Jim's hand firmly. The rank stripes on their sleeves are visible - Spock's with a wide band and a thinner band above it, Jim's with a single wide band.
Sparks and fireworks surround their joined hands, radiating outward from where they've made contact.
Above the drawing is written "Trektober" and "Day 13 - First Contact" Below it is written "@aerialworms" and "Spocktober"./End ID]

I think wariness and anger is absolutely valid. Everyone is entitled to their own emotion. And I agree with what you’re saying on business ventures.
What OP was getting at, and the person who originally shared those thoughts, who happened to be me, was that the sentiment of “this isn’t queer representation” without seeing Spock explicitly kissing a man, can be perceived as very hurtful to other members of the LGTBQ+ community.
SNW is existing in a place that’s kind of like Schrödinger’s gay rep. We haven’t seen it in the trailer yet, which is understandably disappointing. I not do secretly headcanon Spock as gay myself, but it doesn’t mean I’m right, and it doesn’t me I’m wrong. It also doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist on the show that hasn’t aired yet. When that happens, and if I’m still not seeing what I hoped to, then I’ll be more than willing to have my own moments of disappointment.
But the original post said nothing about your right to be angry. It said everything about how bisexual, pansexual, transsexual, non-binary, asexual and agender folks constantly see themselves being told by other members of the community that they are not queer enough to count. It’s McCoy/Spock shippers being told that if Spock isn’t ending up with any man that isn’t Kirk, (and I’m a diehard Spirk shipper) the show has failed.
Folks absolutely have a right to be wary and upset. I’m as wary as I am excited! I want Spock to make sassy comments and pretty eyes at gentlemen. And maybe he will. I won’t know until June. And maybe I won’t see it. Maybe I’ll be disappointed then. Maybe I’ll ignore it once it’s done and continue writing my TOS fic on my merry way.
The anger folks have is understandable. That was never in question. Stating that two minutes of a trailer for is a show that’s failing in queer representation in front of several other members of the community who identify as queer, but are not gay and lesbian, for the outrage at one male character with an out-of-context kissing scene and out-of-context sex scene with a woman that he was betrothed to and will not end up with in canon, can and is being perceived by other community members as not being “queer enough” to exist.
Personally, my take on the trailer is that I agree with the person who said it’s straight baiting, and if they choose to do an interesting reveal of his sexuality, it might be put in an episode reveal of that instead. Which would have an NDA attached to it where Ethan would not be able to speak about that at conventions.
As a writer, I wouldn’t know why they’d bring in T’Pring’s character if it were not to tell a story of all the ways their betrothal is doomed—including a potential reveal for a closeted Spock emerging storyline.
As a person who does my research, I know that one of the writers on Episode Four is a phenomenal gentleman who loves Superheros, writes for Moon Knight, and is openly gay. Does that mean anything for the network choosing to go this way? Nope. But it means that there is more substance to a show than trailers alone.
Anyways, I am sorry if you are angry and disappointed with the trailer, and I’m sorry if my thoughts flared up your anger. My intent was not to say what you were allowed to feel, my intent was to say that queer people who are not gay, and not lesbians exist, and I see them and love them very much and will defend them, too, until my last.
A friend of mine commented on the new SNW trailers and her thoughts summed up my own better than I can at the moment. Luckily for me she's letting me share them here:
•Spock could be experimenting.
•Spock could be trying to prove that he’s Vulcan enough for his society by keeping up with the expectations of his betrothal bond.
•They could be setting up a really heartbreaking episode where he’s performing for the logical reason of “this is how I am accepted” vs. “I personally would not have chosen this for myself”
•There could still be an mlm or ace coming out story to be told here.
•He could be bi/pan.
Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence.
These scenes we've seen are less than two seconds in length combined. We have no context for any of them. As other people have stated, Spock having relationships with women does NOT mean he can't still be queer.
